Compassionate Fentanyl Withdrawal Treatment in Happy Valley, Oregon

Understanding Opioid Withdrawal

Individuals experience withdrawal symptoms of fentanyl and other opioids when they are dependent upon the drug and reduce or suddenly stop taking it. This withdrawal syndrome occurs because fentanyl binds to opioid receptors in the brain and central nervous system.

This is what produces the pain relief and euphoria, and also what makes fentanyl withdrawal symptoms so severe.

Many addicted individuals continue using fentanyl simply because they don’t want to endure the opiate withdrawal symptoms, which can be quite harsh.

As for a fentanyl withdrawal timeline, symptoms of withdrawal begin 8-24 hours after last use. They continue for 4-10 days from last dose, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Fentanyl Withdrawal Symptoms

The symptoms of acute withdrawal from fentanyl dependence often include:

  • Flu-like symptoms (e.g., body aches, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
  • Anxiety, fear, disorientation
  • Heart pounding, elevated blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Hot and cold flashes
  • Perspiration, goose bumps
  • Muscle cramps and spasms
  • Intense cravings

These symptoms of withdrawal from opioid addiction can be very uncomfortable, but are not typically life-threatening.

Fentanyl Detoxification

Upon stopping use of this drug, the body begins to detoxify from it. The individual will experience many of the above symptoms during fentanyl detox. The severity of the experience will depend on the severity of the fentanyl dependence. Medical detox is recommended particularly for all opiates as opposed to detoxing outside of a treatment center.

The detoxification process should be overseen by a qualified healthcare practitioner specifically trained in fentanyl withdrawal treatment. Medical professionals can provide the necessary oversight and monitoring, ensuring the withdrawal process is progressing as expected and the individual is safe and healthy throughout the detox experience.

Whether the detox should be conducted in a residential inpatient facility or an outpatient facility will depend on the level of the addiction and corresponding anticipated severity of the detox and initial withdrawal. For many individuals, an outpatient facility works well for their detox. Others fare better in a residential facility where they can receive round-the-clock supervision and monitoring.

The detoxification period is a time of getting the drug out of the individual’s system. It is the initial stage of healing. No counseling or other important discussions are conducted in this vulnerable time, however.

Recovering from Fentanyl Addiction

Substance abuse treatment for fentanyl addiction helps individuals overcome opioid dependence, regain control of their lives, and achieve long-term recovery. Without treatment, fentanyl addiction can lead to severe health complications, social isolation, and increased risk of overdose and death.

Professional treatment programs provide the necessary support, resources, and interventions to help individuals break free from fentanyl addiction and rebuild their lives.

Medication- Assisted Treatment

As an opioid, fentanyl can bring very uncomfortable and even dangerous withdrawal experiences. Opioid withdrawal symptoms can be quite severe. Medication can help ease the symptoms of opioid withdrawal quite a lot. Thus, medication-assisted treatment conducted in a medical detox facility is always recommended for addiction treatment concerning fentanyl use and opioid use disorder.

Common medications for opioid use disorders, including fentanyl use disorder, are safe and effective. These pharmaceuticals interact with the same opioid receptors in the brain as with the fentanyl, but produce different effects. This is why they are effective in opioid addiction treatment.

Methadone

Methadone is an opioid receptor full opioid agonist. It attaches to and activates opioid receptors to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Once used quite a lot, methadone is used less frequently in modern addiction treatment

Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is an opioid receptor partial agonist. Buprenorphine attaches to and partially activates opioid receptors to reduce symptoms and cravings of opiate withdrawal. Buprenorphine is commonly used in addiction treatment.

Naltrexone

Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist. It prevents fentanyl from attaching to opioid receptors, blocking fentanyl’s effects. Naltrexone is commonly used in treatment for opioids.

Naloxone

In March 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced approval of the first nonprescription naloxone product, Narcan. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) notes that this life-saving medication can reverse opioid overdose, prevent overdose deaths, and save lives. It’s available (or soon will be) in drug stores, convenience stores, gas stations, and in online marketplaces. If you have a fentanyl addict in your home, you should have a supply of naloxone in your medicine cabinet. Let us hope you don’t need it.

Co-Occurring Conditions in Addiction Treatment

Opioid use disorder – fentanyl addiction – often occurs in conjunction with other mental health challenges. Indeed, opiate drug abuse usually masks underlying mental health conditions. Therefore, when the opiate ingestion stops, these other mental health challenges tend to surface.

This is another reason to undergo fentanyl withdrawal in a qualified treatment center under the care and supervision of qualified medical professionals. We can manage whatever arises as the patient is undergoing fentanyl addiction treatment using a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities as appropriate to the individual and the individual’s conditions.

Fentanyl Withdrawal Treatment and Premiere Recovery Center

The dedicated clinicians and staff at Premiere Recovery Center are fully equipped to help you with whatever stage of fentanyl withdrawal you need help with. If you/the fentanyl patient are ambulatory, detox can likely be conducted here on-site. If an inpatient/residential facility is called for, we will help you find the best option for your situation.

At our treatment facility, we offer addiction medicine to patients at levels of care 2.1 (9-20 weekly therapy hours) and 2.5 (20+ weekly hours). Patients may enter treatment at one of these levels or, when patients are down-leveled from requiring residential care (levels of care 3 +), we welcome them in our fentanyl treatment facility.

Intensive Outpatient Therapy

Premiere Recovery Center provides intensive outpatient therapy to those looking to recover from fentanyl/opioid use disorder and other substance use disorders. Co-occurring mental health issues are also addressed along with addiction medicine treatments.

Our intensive outpatient model replaces the traditional residential rehab center with a modern approach to addiction medicine. The intensive outpatient model surpasses the traditional model in three important ways. First, we can offer scheduling flexibility to work around work demands. This helps preserve confidentiality of treatment as colleagues and professional acquaintances do not have to know. Second, no longer is it necessary to take a leave of absence or leave loved ones at home for a few months to attend fentanyl rehab. This also helps preserve privacy and confidentiality. Third and perhaps most importantly, when the patient resides at home and goes to work every day throughout treatment, just like normal, the patient’s environment adapts to the patient’s shifts alongside the patient. This helps support recovery and helps smooth the post-treatment transition back to regular life. And finally, as a practical matter, outpatient treatment is much more cost-effective, allowing insurance coverage and private budgets to be stretched over longer time periods, helping the individual receive care for more time.

Oversight and Care

Intensive outpatient care offers similar oversight to residential care, just not 24/7. Our fentanyl addiction therapy includes multiple treatment modalities, all evidence-based, to address the issue and its roots from multiple angles.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

For fentanyl withdrawal, medication is always prescribed. This is because the brain and body need some time to get used to not having the fentanyl in the system. Exactly which pharmaceuticals and for how long will be determined based on the individual patient’s set of circumstances.

Healthcare and Nutrition

When individuals are addicted to a substance, their diet and other self-care tend to take a distant back seat. People’s health tends to decline during drug abuse periods. We check vitamin levels, supplement as necessary, and ensure healthy dietary awareness and practices moving forward to support and promote greater health and vitality. It’s difficult to heal from fentanyl addiction if the body is ill in other ways, so we aim to achieve optimal physical health to ease the recovery journey’s challenges.

Individual and Group Therapy

Our patients need both individual and group therapy to maximize beneficial addiction treatment outcomes. Individual therapy sessions allow for deep dives into personal matters to help our clinicians manage and direct the treatment plan. Group therapy sessions take advantage of humans’ natural capacity to come together and support each other in difficult times. Group therapy also offers additional benefits not possible in individual therapy. This includes giving and receiving peer critique as well as support, helping peers heal and progress with insightful contributions. This also allows for reconsideration of one’s own experiences. We can’t change the past or the catalyzing events that helped bring about the fentanyl addiction, but we can change how we perceive what happened and look at it from a healthier angle. When patients hear peers reflect on their experiences, this invites all listeners to view their own experiences differently.

Meditation

Science has found multiple benefits to a practice of mindfulness meditation, including literally building brain cells in areas of contentment, attention, and memory. This aspect alone offers a tremendous aid to the recovery work individuals do. Additionally, time spent alone in quiet reflection helps individuals better manage their lives with greater consciousness and intentionality. All of this strengthens the patient to resist the temptations of fentanyl.

Clinical Oversight

Our patients benefit from a range of therapeutic modalities, each directed by specialists in that area. Thus, our patients work with a variety of therapists. Our clinicians conduct regular meetings discussing each of our patients and their progress, ensuring optimal care and oversight for everyone under our care.

Family Therapy

Family therapy services help the families of our patients learn to support the sobriety of their fentanyl-addicted loved one. Individuals who benefit from the loving support of their families tend to heal better, faster, and more permanently than individuals without family support. With a goal of long-term recovery success from fentanyl addiction, we happily provide therapy to family members.

Housing Options

We understand that for various reasons, sometimes it’s better for the patient to stay away from home during treatment, yet in a clean-and-sober environment. We offer two luxury homes nearby for this purpose, one in Happy Valley (men) and the other in Pleasant Valley (women). These are upscale, spacious, massive, safe, private, quiet, clean-and-sober homes with every conceivable amenity, built to maximize your comfort during fentanyl addiction treatment. You are invited to stay with us if you like.

For the following phase, transitional housing may be in order. We are affiliated with Premiere Sober Living, a clean-and-sober transitional housing facility. Many of our current and former patients reside at Premiere Sober Living.
